The Gathering Room

This project centred on the creation of a generous open-plan extension, designed to become the social heart of the home. Previously compartmentalised and lacking flow, the existing layout made it difficult to connect cooking, dining and living in a way that suited everyday family life. With a clear ambition for a space that felt welcoming, cohesive and easy to live in, the challenge was to bring structure and clarity to a blank architectural opportunity while ensuring the finished result felt calm rather than overwhelming.

The new layout carefully balances function and atmosphere, allowing each zone to sit comfortably within the wider space while remaining visually connected. Clean-lined cabinetry, a restrained palette and considered lighting establish a sense of order, while warm materials and soft furnishings introduce comfort and approachability. Sightlines were refined to enhance flow through the kitchen, dining and living area, with glazing and rooflights drawing natural light deep into the plan. The result is a space that feels resolved and intuitive, a room designed for gathering, everyday living and relaxed entertaining, now firmly established as the centre of the home.
